A wild idea for a reality tv show

That’s what Darryl Silver, Stephen David, David Eilenbert and Mark Wolper were sitting around trying to come up with when they thought up the idea of finding some young men who were thinking of becoming Catholic priests, and following them around as they wrestled with the decision. The result was a five-part series that aired on A&E last April called “God or the Girl.”

It was surprisingly good — surprising because of how the Church and the priesthood are often handled by the entertainment industry — and respectful of the discernment process men go through in trying to find their vocation. So good, they’re thinking of following up with another set of guys and going through it again, which many Catholics in the audience have asked them to do.

The series is out on DVD now. You can find it, and materials for vocation directors and youth ministers as well, at www.godorthegirl.com.

(And yes, it’s a misnomer, because those who choose marriage continue their relationship with God. It’s just a catchier title than something like ‘Marriage or Priesthood?’)
