Here we go again
It’s early October, but the Christmas cops are already at it.
The kids at Windmill Point Elementary were into their second day of rehearsals for “A Penguin Christmas†when they got word the show would be canned because it mentioned Christmas and its secular symbols made people think of the holiday.
Yes, it’s that bad. I remember last Christmas season when Fox newsman John Gibson was on my show for his book The War on Christmas, and he pointed to some schools where even the colors red and green were banned from parties and art projects because they represent Christmas. That’s just incoherent…
So, Janice Karst is a spokesperson for this Florida school, and her explanation is that
“We’re a very diverse and very inclusive community and we have to consider every child every day.â€
…Karst maintains the principal was acting in the best interest of her school, but Brad Dacus with the Pacific Justice Institute says her reaction sends a bad message to kids.
“They’re basically oppressing that child and giving them a real negative message that religious freedom means you have to keep it to yourself.â€
America is what…86 percent Christian? Why is anti-Christian activism the only bias, the only intolerance, still allowed? Karst says they “have to consider every child every day,” but Kelly Shackelford, of the Liberty Legal Institute, says
Every child it would seem, but those with Christian traditions.
“Unfortunately, some schools feel like because there’s diversity they have to discriminate against people who believe certain things and that’s just wrong.â€
He says administrators often panic and do dumb things when there is no legal reason to do so.
“In fact, there are cases that say, if you aren’t teaching the religious basis of the holidays in this country, then you’re doing a very poor job of educating our children.â€
And that’s really not in the best interest of the schools. Let me know what you’re hearing out there as the seasons approach. Halloween is already everywhere. There will be plenty more on that, and Christmas, here in the Forum.
