Inconsistency in the ethic of life? That doesn’t make sense
Pro-life President George Bush has tread shaky ground before with those gnarly issues involving bioethics and human life. But he has guarded that line we don’t cross, protecting the most fundamental right to life for the most vulnerable, each time. Now, he seems to have blurred vision and the line got fuzzy when he came up against the FDA approval of the Plan B ‘morning after’ pill for over the counter sales.
Specifically, he got caught unprepared, it seems, by the move his new FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach made to approve those sales of the drug, that de facto can cause the abortion of a fertilized egg. And everyone knows that fertilization means life, forget about the debate over ‘personhood.’ It’s a smokescreen.
At a White House press conference this morning, the President was asked by Bill Sammon a reporter from the Washington Examiner about Plan B and his new FDA commissioner who supports its over the counter status. “Mr. President, some pro-life groups are worried that your choice of FDA Commissioner will approve over the counter sales of Plan B, a pill that, they say, essentially can cause early-term abortions,” said the reporter. “Do you stand by this choice, and how do you feel about Plan B in general?”
The President replied, “I believe that Plan B ought to be — ought to require a prescription for minors, is what I believe. And I support Andy’s decision.”
That’s how Lifenews.com is reporting it, and Fr. Thomas Euteneuer of Human Life International is quick to declare the misstep.
A press release by Human Life International underscored the seriousness of the move as it was titled, “President Bush Files for Divorce with Catholic Base.” Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International commented, “President Bush’s implied support for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is completely inconsistent with his recent veto of the embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) funding bill. What the president apparently fails to realize is that Plan B kills the same innocent unborn children that the ESCR process does.”
President Bush cannot have thought this through.
Concerned Women for America (CWA) blasted the decision noting that it is ludicrous to allow Plan B without medical supervision when a low-dose of the same drug (birth control pills) requires medical oversight to protect women from serious health complications.
Why is common sense so lacking in these issues? Or at least by those who make the decisions?!
Rev. Euteneuer added, “The president must demonstrate a consistent respect for the sanctity of all human life or he risks provoking a great divorce with the conservative Catholics that compromise a large part of his support base. Human beings in the embryonic stage of development deserve equal protection under the law and the president’s position falls far short of that mark.”
Ask President Bush to stay consistent in all efforts and legislation that concerns life.

Dear Shiela;
I have enjoyed your radio show and was saddened to not hear your voice of reason. My biggest fear is that Relavent Radio is becomming Social Issues Democrat Radio. I was very disappointed at the presidents decision to allow the abortion pill to be sold over the counter, But I was shocked at the giddiness of Drew Mariani over this President Divorces Catholic Base.
The sad truth is that their is no “Catholic Base”, because there is no Catholic Leadership. There is no penalty by going against Catholic Principles. If there was a penalty then catholic’s like John Kerry and Dick Durbin would be ex-communicated and Catholics would not vote for them. But 50% of the self-identified catholics will vote for pro-abortionist and pro-gay Democrats. These might be the same 60% of catholics who do not believe in the real presence of Jesus in communion ( although I believe that 100% of Catholics believe, because if you do not believe you are not a Catholic). If our leadership- the American Bishops – will not stand up for Church Teaching who will?
Catholic Radio is hurting by your leaving.
Godspeed
