It’s about time
…and honor.
I’ve been covering the Mt. Soledad War Memorial story for months, and waiting for this victory in what should never have been a battle.
In brief, a large cross that stands at the center of this renowned memorial in honor of the fallen veterans of war — and has stood high above San Diego in this memorial since 1954 — was offensive to an atheist activist who fought for 17 years in court for its removal. In spite of overwhelming civic and legislative support for the cross — and the fact that America is 86 percent Christian — US District Judge Gordon Thompson ruled in favor of the atheist. He ordered the removal of the cross.
The Thomas More Law Center carried on the battle to save the Mt. Soledad cross, and after some setbacks, finally got the backing by Congress and now the President to place the War Memorial under federal custody and save the cross.
You can read the story here and here. The Thomas More Law Center deserves a great deal of credit, and needs a good deal of backing. Their services will certainly be needed in the public square again, and probably in no time.
