Media introspection?
One of them is engaging in that, the other is not.
But none of it is soul-searching. What it’s good for, though, is to make us stop and think about the truth of what both are saying.
Here’s my take on it, which I can’t take credit for thinking up myself in a noble moment. I was inspired by this wisdom from Thomas A Kempis in Imitation of Christ. Without digging it out – both the book and the exact reference – this is what he said. When you see something you really don’t like in others, when you have all the material to criticize them and look with scorn or righteous indignation at what they’re doing, don’t be scornful and critical. Instead, let it be a lesson in how not to act.
And in the case of what that NRO media blog says, the whole series of sad human exploits causing a media circus marathon that started…..when?..the original OJ trial?….Anna Nicole Smith through Paris through Britney?….the many and assorted fallen politicians….constitute a whole education in how not to act. And what not to watch.
Media thrive on viewers/listeners/readers. Gravitate toward measured reporting. Look for civility, honesty and goodwill.
