Organ donation
This subject has generated a lot of confusion and misinformation, and I put up a post on it below. A friend asked what the better way to be an organ donor is, better than checking your driver’s license, since the compassionate cause is certainly one we should embrace. We just have to protect ourselves and our families from that unethical (and spreading) likelihood of defining death prematurely to harvest needed organs in cases some doctors consider hopeless — which actually aren’t.
I’ll come back to this with more information, but the short answer is to take your name off the state registry of donors, which goes together with the driver’s license designation. To be a donor, designate someone in particular to make that decision for you, obviously a family member or loved one you trust, and designate that person in writing.
It’s more important — and safer — these days to clarify what you do want than what you think you don’t want.
