Take heart
Here’s what I think. As mentioned in one of the earlier posts, this election turned up a lot of victories for conservatives. I hope the mainstream media gets around to focusing on that, because some of the Democrats who won their elections were conservative in principles. And that translates to respect for life, natural law, moral order.
A cynical view would be that this was a ‘bait & switch’ strategy by Democratic leadership, to run a number of moderate or conservative Democrats for office who are attractive to Americans who hold traditional values, and then when they win and Democrats take control of Congress, the party leadership would run business according to their very liberal agenda. It’s plausible, may even be true.
But it’s going to be obvious to the American people if they do not get represented as they voted. That’s already the reason a number of Republicans lost their races, because they had strayed too far off their base principles, and drifted off conservative issues. What should matter to the people of life, and traditional values, is not that a party lost or won the House and Senate. It’s that conservative values figured largely in that election — even in the races and initiatives where pro-lifers lost. Because even in the losses, the numbers were very close, and strategists do look at numbers closely.
They’d better pay attention to them. I just heard a news report that soon-to-be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told President Bush this morning that he needs make changes that reflect the will of the people. So does she. And the people will be paying attention.
