Terri Schiavo’s Family

They have gone through more than most people can imagine. Now, Bob Schindler, Terri’s father, is in intensive care. Wesley Smith has early word on it:

Robert Schindler, Terri Schiavo’s father, has had a stroke and is in a hospital intensive care unit. He is conscious. At present, the doctors are trying to stabilize his condition. Once that is done, he will be transferred to a rehabilitation center. His family, always a class act, is at his side and are hopeful for Bob’s full recovery.

It’s been a very tough couple of years for the Schindler family. Regardless of where one stands on the Terri Schiavo case, the Schindlers–Bob, Mary, Bobby, and Suzanne Vitadamo–deserve our best wishes and, for those of a mind, prayers, toward Bob’s complete recovery and the family’s well being in this difficult time.

The Schindlers are a class act, alright. When Terri finally passed away, they had beeen through brutal months of giving themselves completely to the struggle to save her, being assaulted by the legal system, the medical profession by virtue of that legal system, and an overwhelmingly hostile media. Actually, years. But the world only started to pay attention in those final months. Though they fought to save her life to the very final moments and were denied even being at her bedside by Michael Schiavo and his attorney, they came out and gave the most profoundly Christian statement imagineable. They forgave all the hostilities, and they thanked all who cared and helped.

And they set about putting together a new life and continue Terri’s legacy in the Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation to benefit the disabled and severely impaired. In October, I met privately with the Schindler family to discuss that story, and ways to carry the work forward. Bob, Mary and Bobby work tirelessly, though they are tired and bone weary from spending themselves completely for others. They and their spiritual director, Bro. Paul O’Donnell, travel extensively — it seems like constantly — on invitation to give talks and lend their support to many pro-life organizations, worldwide.

Now, Bob is in intensive care. Please pray for him.
