The European Union struggles with stem cells
There is plenty in this article that should be highlighed. But first, what’s a “Competitiveness Minister?” Maybe that’s a clue to the European mindset.
Anyway, they seem to be both confused, and confusing. In a press conference after the EU Council of Ministers met for a stem cell debate,
the Commissioner for Science and Research, Janez Potocknik, said that although the EU will not be funding such research itself, the destruction of the embryo was an inevitable phase in the process. It is simply that the EU will not be involved in that phase.
Asked specifically whether this was not a “fudged” solution, given that such research will ultimately involve the destruction of embryos, the commissioner said smilingly: “I don’t know what you want me to say”.
Now, parse those statements apart. The first one more or less takes the Pontius Pilate stance.
And the second one suggests that maybe in place of the Competitiveness Minister, they could use a Spin Meister.
