Will Gitmo close?

Now here’s a good question. We know that…

Pressure to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility that houses war on terror detainees been building — from the courts and from Congress — and many Bush administration officials agree it has become a lightning rod and should be shut down.

But……

The question is what to do with all the bad guys.

Seriously.

President George W. Bush said the prison always was supposed to be temporary.

“We would like to end the Guantanamo,” Bush said last June. “We’d like it to be empty.”

We’d like to not be at war. We’d like the war to end. We’d like the insurgents to stop attacking everyone from our troops to their own people in Mosques and city streets. But that’s a ‘down the road’ ideal that doesn’t pass a present reality check.

Last March, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he’d like to close the prison.

But shutting down the controversial facility, also known as Gitmo, may be easier said than done. The biggest problem for the White House may be where to place all the detainees, some of whom rank among the world’s most dangerous suspected terrorists.

Nobody has proposed a reasonable alternative yet.
