“America needs a Mother…”

That’s what I heard when I turned on the car radio today and scanned for news, right when Rush Limbaugh said those words, “or a queen bee, or something like that…” he added. Then he said Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi are the two contenders for that title right now.

No question. On the day she was installed as Speaker of the House, Pelosi called herself the most powerful woman in America. Much of the media and Democratic party have long considered Hillary to own that title (though there are those in the public who may think Oprah is a contender).

First of all, does America need a mother? What we need is a grown-up in the house to settle down all the bickering kids. It could be a strong father or mother, just as long as they have values and principles that match our country’s tradition and the majority of our people.

Which gets us back to the candidates….for Mother, that is. Do either of these women qualify as the quintessential mother of America? Barbara Bush was sort of considered that back when Bush 41 was president. Laura Bush seems to be embraced by much of the country, across the landscape of demographics, because she’s mature and graceful and intelligent and secure.

It is interesting that in that big swearing-in event with Pelosi taking over the House, she surrounded herself by the children of her family as she swung the gavel. It was, in a snapshot, the picture of the woman who can do it all and do it with authority. Now, with Hillary’s streaming video announcement on her website a few days ago being so…cushy and at-home looking on that big sofa, and Hillary doing a photo-op event surrounded by children, it appears that she is positioning herself the same way. As the Woman in Charge. For most of us, that means Mom.

Watch these things, folks. Pay attention to how the media portray stories and candidates and issues. They are shaping what you think. You’re the ones who decided who took over “the People’s House,” as Pelosi correctly refers to Congress. Next up, you’ll be the ones to decide who takes over the White House.

There have been a lot of great women leaders of countries around the world. And great men. But they don’t achieve their greatness by winning high office. They win that office because they have already achieved it, and the people trust them enough to place the national ‘family’ in their care.
