Please some of the people some of the time

The more time goes on in the new Obama administration, the clearer Robert George’s analysis rings true.

What Obama Will Give the Left was accurate.

His creation of and appointment to the Women’s Issues post is just one more example.

Earlier this month, President Obama nominated Melanne Verveer to the newly-created position of Ambassador-at-Large for Women’s Issues. Pro-life groups have worried that the position was created to “Promote abortion and overturn pro-life laws in nations across the world,” and Catholic News Agency has reported that the position may have been created as a sop to the president’s pro-abortion backers.

Verveer certainly has the pro-abortion bona-fides, and in line with other controversial appointments of this administration, Verveer is a well-connected Catholic.

In both her professional career and political commitments, Verveer has been an ardent supporter of abortion. As Executive Vice-President of People for the American Way, Verveer helped orchestrate the rejection of Judge Robert Bork’s nomination to the Supreme Court. She also testified against the nomination of the late William Rehnquist as Chief Justice, in part, because of his perceived hostility to Roe.

So for accuracy and clarity, shouldn’t this post be designated as represeting Liberal Women’s Issues?

This is another stinging reminder that elections have consequences.

And all those Catholics involved in this story may have their own interpretation of the lasting ones.

  • When Judd Gregg refuses a cabinet post, he’s called courageous for standing up for principle. When Obama appoints a liberal to the cabinet, it’s a shame for the country. Heads or tails, Obama’s the loser. Oh well, life’s tuff at da top. In the end the lasting issue will be the economy. The earning power and spendable income for the average American has dropped in the last 8 years while the very rich have gotten…. well… very richer. If Obama raises that earning power and spendable income rises, we will all benefit. If it don’t, we will be in stagflation. Women’s issues are ok, but the economy is where the rubber hits the road, and if there’s not enough tread on the tires, we are ripe for a blow out.

  • In the end, I believe, the lasting issue will be the sanctity and dignity of each and every human life. We can’t debate the morality of a just and equitable economy and health care and cars and tires if human beings in any class can be deemed unworthy of life, and then that’s considered to be just one issue among many.
