Schiavo still crossing the line

The deadline, to name just one.

The Federal Election Commission in Washington has fined the political action committee created by Terri Schiavo’s former husband. After ordering her painful two-week-long starvation and dehydration death in March 2005, Michael Schiavo created the PAC to target pro-life lawmakers who tried to stop him from killing her.

The TerriPAC Michael created with his brother Brian Schiavo has frequently run afoul of the federal agency by failing to file its campaign finance reports on time or include all of the necessary information.

This is no surprise. Michael Schiavo failed to file his guardianship reports on time when Terri was still alive. But he faced no consequences for that, or anything else he failed to produce…..like proof that Terri would want to be denied nutrition and hydration rather than cared for by her family. A constitutionally required burden of proof, by the way, when the stakes are as high as the right to life.

But that’s ‘old news,’ and Schiavo has moved on to political action now.

In Pennsylvania, he attacked pro-life Sen. Rick Santorum — calling him “the only U.S. senator who flew to Florida and interfered with Terri Schiavo’s private family tragedy.”

Actually, Michael Schiavo caused Terri’s family to suffer a long and brutal tragedy. Legislators across the country, and Church leaders in the Vatican, tried to bring humanitarian relief and remedy to this tragedy and set new standards of care for the disabled.

And her family still is. Schiavo continues to be disingenuous by using Terri’s name as he is, for political vengeance against those who tried to save her life. Her name and legacy are better preserved in the most important action coalition of all, the foundation to save lives and defend the vulnerable.
