While everyone’s watching the Democratic candidates…

…the Republicans are talking terms on the controversial social issues, and Roe is making headlines already in presidential politics.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain, looking to improve his standing with the party’s conservative voters, said Sunday the court decision that legalized abortion should be overturned.

Funny, how the AP assigns McCain a motive for his convictions.

“I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned,” the Arizona senator told about 800 people in South Carolina, one of the early voting states.

McCain also vowed that if elected, he would appoint judges who “strictly interpret the Constitution of the United States and do not legislate from the bench.”

They’re staking their territory with bold language, but if the mainstream media aren’t listening, how much sound do they make?

Plenty, with mainstream Americans engaged in hearing what the media don’t report. Take Sen. Sam Brownback, for instance.

Many conservatives and religious leaders view Brownback as a serious candidate to succeed President George W. Bush.

Whether Brownback does, there’s little doubt he will become a major figure in U.S. public life and an increasingly critical player in its governing coalitions.

In spite of an inattentive media.

On the stump, Brownback preaches the gospel of the Christian right, stating his strong opposition to abortion and gay marriage.

Like Ronald Reagan, Brownback believes “America must be that ‘Shining City on a Hill,’ where faith, moral values and respect for life are celebrated.”

He tells audiences, “I am unequivocally pro-life and believe in upholding the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman.”

Brownback says his stance on moral values will distinguish him from others vying for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

This is going to be a very interesting presidential campaign, especially when it comes to the debates. Now, if only people with microphones and tv cameras start asking candidates the right questions…
