Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign’s hidden secret

This is an important notice I’ve wanted to write about for the past couple of weeks. In the meantime, I’m only seeing the great proliferation of the pink ribbons and merchandising tie-ins everywhere that marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. That is wonderful to see, with even major league sports getting involved with pink wrist bands on the football refs and baseball umps, pink towels draped around the necks of NFL players on the bench, pink football jerseys on some of the players’ wives, etc…

The awareness campaign is crucial. So let’s be fully aware. I’m getting mail from well informed pro-life citizens wondering how to spread the word that the highest profile organization, the Susan B. Komen Foundation that sponsors breast cancer research, also funds Planned Parenthood.

That’s been known for years.

“The Susan G. Komen Foundation has won a reputation fighting breast cancer, but pro-lifers have learned to their chagrin that the Dallas-based group gives money to Planned Parenthood. For many, that is a curious irony since the link between abortion and breast cancer is well documented. It is even more ironic, however, that the foundation gives money on the one hand to save lives, yet funds another organization–Planned Parenthood–that specializes in taking innocent life. The foundation rejected calls to stop funding Planned Parenthood, saying that abortion does not cause breast cancer. Karen Malec, of the Illinois Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, notes that 27 out of 35 major international studies have found the link.

Here’s the best site for well-grounded, expert information on the ABC link.

As of 2006, eight medical organizations recognize that abortion raises a woman’s risk for breast cancer, independently of the risk of delaying the birth of a first child (a secondary effect that all experts already acknowledge).  An additional medical organization, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, issued a statement in 2003 calling on doctors to inform patients about a “highly plausible” relationship between abortion and breast cancer.

But that information keeps getting suppressed, which is another campaign that’s been going on for several years – a campaign of disinformation.

Here’s what Maryanne wrote in one of my letters:

I was in the grocery store today. Many many brands are giving money to Susan B. Komen Foundation with each purchase of their product. Susan B. Komen gives money to Planned Parenthood. How sad an organization trying to cure breast cancer gives money to an organization that increases the risk of breast cancer not to mention advocates abortion…There are many organizations out there fighting breast cancer who do not support Planned Parenthood. These are the organizations that should be gettig this money.

That’s the campaign of awareness we need right now.
